On 5th June 2024 DTNI held a seminar and participative workshop on the theme of ‘A New Localism: Wealth Building, Good Jobs & the Social Economy’.
The event offered community anchor organisations the opportunity to hear from the Minister for Economy Conor Murphy’s recently announced Economic Mission and its intended benefits for local communities.
Conor Murphy’s new economic mission for the economy of Northern Ireland around over the next three years includes a focus on: creating good jobs, promoting regional balance, raising productivity and reducing carbon emissions.
This strategy proposes a more collaborative approach to economic development, engaging meaningfully with business representatives, trade unions, and academia. The ‘Missions’ emphasis on the ‘Social Economy’ presents Community Businesses with an opportunity to have its voice heard, its asks considered and its role as a key player in local economic development clearly set out in within Local Economic Development Plans.

Key Insights from Critical Friends of the Minister
To fully understand how this strategy will transpire and what it means for our sector of community development trusts and social enterprises, at this conference we heard from two of the Ministers critical friends who shared insights on their proposed way forward:
Dr Conor Patterson from the Newry and Mourne Co-operative and Enterprise Agency who will advise the Minister on regional balance, and
Dr Lisa Wilson from the Nevin Economic Research Institute who will advise the Minister on good jobs.
Both experts shared valuable insights into the path forward for local economic development, highlighting the importance of engaging with the VCSE sector and recognising the role of Community Businesses in driving positive change.
Workshops: Shaping Solutions for Local Development
The event also included participative workshops, enabling attendees from the VCSE sector to explore practical solutions to local development challenges. These discussions provided a platform for individuals to collaborate on strategies for building local wealth, creating sustainable jobs, and supporting the growth of the social economy.
